The great American novel Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain was the inspiration for founder Matthew Crowe when he decided to start a new Minneapolis-based venture capital firm. In the current economic environment one might think now is not the time; however, Huckleberry appears to have a very unique twist.
Their “What’s Your Huckleberry” campaign will be starting this spring and is one of many sneak peaks into their new model of venture capital and the hip new brand of Huckleberry. What is a Huckleberry? A ‘Huckleberry’ is a problem in need of a solution.
Their upcoming web portal will allow users to identify and discuss Huckleberries (problems) in specific industries, technologies, demographics or existing products and services. Huckleberry Ventures will be hosting two annual events promoted nationally through targeted PR – similar to the Xprize – selecting the very best Huckleberries as the winners and recipients of an investment from Huckleberry. This is a small part of their more “proactive” approach to venture capital which has traditionally been seen as an unchanged and reactive industry.
With its brand centric, proactive investment model, Huckleberry will actively promote itself to the entrepreneurial world through its unique deal sourcing model, strong investment team, and operations-focused execution strategy.
“We want to identify problems in need of solutions and build successful companies,” says Crowe who states he’s an entrepreneur first and a venture capitalist second, allowing him to far better understand what entrepreneurs want and need while at the same time providing the marketplace with sustainable companies.
Huckleberry plans to make early stage investments in consumer-focused products and services related to the Internet, mobile communications, retail, and ‘socially-minded’ companies. This is a dramatic change in the Midwest venture landscape traditionally known for Med Tech and IT investments. Target, Best Buy, and 3M are just a few of the consumer-led brands that are headquartered in Minneapolis.
“Having the best brand, the best team, the best capital, and investing in only te best entrepreneurs – that’s a recipe for success,” says Crowe.

NEW YORK Rapid sales growth of nearly 442 percent is the accomplishment that drove technology company Voxel dot Net to a position on Inc.’s third annual Inc. 5000, an exclusive ranking of the nation’s fastest-growing private companies.Voxel dot Net debuted on Inc. Magazine’s 2009 list of America’s fastest-growing private companies in the top 15 percentile, to #623. Voxel also ranked No. 48 among the “Top 100 Inc. 500|5000 Companies by Metro Area – New York-Northern New Jersey-Long Island, NY-NJ-PA” and No. 82 among the Top 100 in IT Services. The selection by Inc. builds on two recent nods from Gartner Research, which selected Voxel as a key player in cloud computing and Web hosting in the August 2009 “Magic Quadrant for Web Hosting and Cloud Infrastructure Services (On Demand)” report and in April 2009, when it was featured as a “Cool Vendor in Cloud Computing.”Voxel joins other prominent brands such as Vizio, GoDaddy, Zipcar, and Honest Tea on this year’s list, which represent the most comprehensive look at the most important segment of the economy -America’s independent-minded entrepreneurs.”Savvy trend spotters and those who invest in private companies know that the Inc. 5000 is the best place to find out about young companies that are achieving success through a wide variety of unprecedented business models, as well as older private companies that are still expanding at an impressive rate,” said Inc. 5000 Project Manager Jim Melloan. “That’s why our list is so eagerly anticipated every year.”Voxel’s debut at a high ranking is significant given its competition – especially among the 371 Inc. 5000 companies based in New York and 658 companies in IT Services. IT Services had the most companies on this year’s list and was among the top five industries by total revenue, generating $13.2 billion. Like many IT services companies, which in aggregate created 89,632 jobs, Voxel has expanded its team in 2008 with the addition of sales and engineering support in Asia and the United States. The company now has a staff of 40 employees in New York and Singapore. We’re excited about the recognition by Inc. as one of the fastest growing private technology companies nationally, regionally and within the rapidly expanding IT industry. Revenue growth only tells part of the picture, so we’re looking forward to the additional attention this honor by Inc. Magazine will bring to the ways we are making it easier for businesses – small to large – to run their Internet-based operations.”Voxel powers high-traffic blogs and Web-based operations for clients such as Perez Hilton, DailyKos, HEAVY, eBay, and AmieStreet. It is a global leader in Internet Infrastructure services including managed hosting, content delivery and cloud computing. Additionally, Voxel offers data storage, IP transit and transport circuits, and raw infrastructure services. As the only company operating its cloud platform on three continents – North America, Europe and Asia, and offering a combination of on-demand and traditional hosting, all packaged with its performance-tuned content delivery network (CDN), Voxel continues to gain attention and build revenues. Voxel foresees a higher placement on Inc.’s list for 2010 as it anticipates boosting revenues from a growing list of new clients, particularly ones operating or delivering content to global Internet users. The 2009 Inc. 5000, serves as a unique report card on the U.S. economy. Despite the ongoing recession, aggregate revenue among the companies on the list actually increased to $214 billion, up $29 billion from last year, with a median three-year growth rate of 126 percent. The Inc. 5000 are responsible for creating more than 1 million jobs since their founding, making the list perhaps the best example of the impact that private, fast-growing companies can have on the economy. Complete results of the Inc. 5000, including company profiles and an interactive database that can be sorted by industry, region, and other criteria, can be found The Inc. 5000 is ranked according to percentage revenue growth from 2005 through 2008. Revenue in 2005 must have been at least $200,000, and revenue in 2008 must have been at least $2 million. The top 10 percent of companies on the list comprise the Inc. 500, now in its 28th year.Founded in 1979 and acquired in 2005 by Mansueto Ventures LLC Inc.
