MoonMan Racing and driver Jim Moon of Crawfordsville, IN, had a sweet & sour weekend of racing action this past weekend, as the team competed at both Kankakee County Speedway on Friday night before returning to the Hooiser state to compete at Kamp Motor Speedway in Boswell Saturday evening, which also marked Jim’s 38th birthday. On Friday night, Jim Moon put himself behind the eight-ball before the first flag even fell on the evening. The MoonMan’s late arrival to the speed plant did not allow for any hot lap session or qualifying attempt. This meant Jim had to scramble to tag the rear (11th) of the first heat race, and though he tried mightily, could only muster a decent seventh place showing. After a few adjustments on the car before the 15-lap last chance consi, the MoonMan was ready to rock & roll his way to the front. Jim began the consi from the inside of row four, and quickly moved up to the third spot where he looked to be solidly in the show. However, on the final lap, veteran driver Dick Potts began to spin in turn two and in the process collected the trailing MoonMan, who straightened up Potts and caused Jim to fall to a seventh place finish. How quick the tide can turn in this game we call dirt track racing. Saturday night, Jim Moon and his fans went to Kamp Motor Speedway to celebrate his 38th birthday. In qualifying, Jim recorded a lap of 14.028, which gave him 11th quick time among the 25 entries. Jim started on the pole of the second heat race and looked to again to have a solid run going until he blew a right rear tire on the final lap and limped to a fourth place finish. This put MoonMan in the 11th starting spot on the grid at the start of the 25-lap feature event. Jim worked his way up to the fourth position behind Ryan Unzicker before attempting the high side of the racing surface. Jim almost immediately went backwards and again had to work his way back towards the front. The final outcome showed Jim recording a seventh place feature finish. A few more adjustments and the MoonMan will be right there knocking on the victory lane door.
The team had planned to race Sunday night at Shepp’s Speedway in Alexander, IL, but inclement weather negated those plans.
Look for the MoonMan race team to possibly attend Tri-City Speedway in Granite City, IL next week, Thursday thru Saturday, for a trio of $2,000 to win UMP Late Model events, before heading back to Shepp’s Speedway next Sunday night. The alternate plan will be to attempt Tri-City on Thursday night before returning to Kankakee again Friday night, and Kamp on Saturday night, with Shepp’s closing out the weekend of racing action.
MoonMan Racing would like to thank the following supporters for all their help during the 2009 season: J-Force Rocks, Rocket Race Cars, Hoosier Tire, Simpson Safety, Advanced Racing Suspensions, Willy’s Carburetors and Dyno Shop, Earl’s of Indy, A E D, Dominator Race Products by Aerotech Styling, Pitmat USA, The Spot Lounge, JEDCO Communications, Race Car Engineering of Lakeland, FL, ADC Diecast, Dirt Profile Web Hosting and Design, and Woodward.
